# The companions of the cave: reading Surah Al-Kahf

> Surah Al-Kahf tells of young believers who take refuge in a cave. This introduction follows the Qur’anic passage without adding names, dialogue or a claimed historical location.

## A refuge and a prayer

The account begins with young believers seeking shelter in a cave and asking their Lord for mercy and guidance. Read [18:9–14](https://quran.com/18/9-14) together. The passage centres their faith and dependence on God; this retelling does not supply imagined names or scenes.

## Waking to a question

In [18:19](https://quran.com/18/19), they ask each other how long they have remained. One is sent to the city to find food, with instructions to act cautiously. An extraordinary account also contains a simple, practical concern: provision and care.

## The limits of what we know

[18:22](https://quran.com/18/22) records differing claims about their number and directs attention back to the Lord’s knowledge. Rather than filling the gaps with speculation, notice how the passage handles uncertain knowledge.

## Read, then reflect

Read the full passage, [18:9–26](https://quran.com/18/9-26), before drawing a lesson from one moment. Where does the narrative describe an event, and where does your own reflection begin? Keep the distinction clear. The cover is symbolic artwork, not an identified location or a reconstruction of the event.
